The newly published Glorious Mountains of Vancouver’s North Shore says the hike out to Goat Ridge Peak (behind Grouse Mountain) “is one of the nicest trips in this entire book.” This pleasant ridge walk features stunted spruce and cedar, granite slabs, and heather meadows. There are a couple of ponds, one of which offers the overheated hiker an opportunity for a refreshing dip. The final climb to the summit requires a short bushwhack. If skies are clear, expect views of Grouse area peaks; the Norvan Valley; Burwell, Coliseum, and Cathedral mountains; and the Needles. Roundtrip distance from the Grouse Mountain Chalet is about 11.2 km with an elevation gain of 371 m. If the weather is inclement, we will stay lower down and sample a number of Mount Fromme’s many mountain-bike trails. In this case our roundtrip distance will be 10 km with an elevation gain of 435 m.
